Assaye Place, Stornoway (Prohibition of Driving – Except For Access) Experimental Order 2020

Overview

We asked if the public were in acceptance of a proposal to make the Assaye Place, Stornoway (Prohibition of Driving - Except For Access) Experimental Order 2020.

A previous Comhairle decision to make Assaye Place a One Way street was reversed in 2013.  The current proposal will prohibit vehicular entry in to Assaye Place from Willowglen Road, except for local access.  Initially this will be an experimental order for 8 months during which time the impact of the change in traffic priorities will be monitored.

Access will be retained from Macaulay Road.

Why We Are Consulting

The reason for implementing this Order is in the interests of road safety.  Concerns have been raised from residents and the local Councillor that there is a high volume of traffic travelling at excessive speeds through Assaye Place from Willowglen Road.  Traffic surveys have been undertaken and although the average vehicle speeds were below 30mph these surveys showed evidence of Assaye Place being used as a through road at peak times.

What Happens Next

Any person wishing to object to the proposed Order should send details in writing to Traffic-Order-Consultations@cne-siar.gov.uk  or in hard copy to:

Chief Executive
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar
Council Offices
Sandwick Road
Stornoway
HS1 2BW

Objections should be received no later than 4pm, Friday 11th September 2020.

Objections should state the full name and address of the objector, the Order to which they relate and the grounds on which they are made.

If the proposal is progressed following consultation this will be made in to a Traffic Regulation Order, advertised and the road signage changed to suit. Following this the access restriction will be active for the experimental period of 8 months.
