Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has launched this year's winter safety Initiative Cùm sàbhailte, cùm gu math sa Gheamhradh seo! Keep Safe, Keep Well this Winter!
The over-arching theme of this year's campaign is one of looking out for vulnerable neighbours. Topics covered include general winter health advice, fire prevention, safety measures to adopt when venturing outside, emergency helpline numbers and a directory of local support services.
The initiative has been endorsed by several individuals including Angela Constance, Cabinet Secretary for Justice and Home Affairs, Cllr Maureen Chalmers, COSLA Community Wellbeing Spokesperson, and actor Jane McCarry, best known for her role as Isa in the popular BBC comedy, 'Still Game'.
Cllr Paul Steele, Leader of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, commented:
"The overarching message of this guidance is one of taking a few simple, planned steps now that will make things easier, and crucially a lot safer for you, your loved ones, and those within your wider community, throughout the coming winter months. I would like to encourage everyone in our communities to take the time to read this guidance and most importantly to look out for one another through the winter months."
Angela Constance, Cabinet Secretary for Justice and Home Affairs, Scottish Government, said:
"The winter months can be challenging so taking some time to prepare now can make this winter safer and easier for people and communities, including keeping important emergency contact details close to hand should you need them. In addition, offering to lend a hand to a neighbour or simply checking in can make such a difference as poor weather and dark nights can contribute to a feeling of isolation."
