Another Successful Year for e-Sgoil Candidates

Last month e-Sgoil candidates from across Scotland who sat Gaelic & Gàidhlig SQA courses received their SQA results with an incredible 87% of the 92 candidates achieving a grade A.

The 92 candidates (a mix of school pupils and adult students) were presented for Learner and Fluent Gaelic courses at National 5, Higher & Advanced Higher levels in partnership with UHI North, West and Hebrides.

All candidates studied online with courses delivered remotely by six e-Sgoil teaching staff based throughout Scotland.

The availability of these online courses facilitated access to SQA Gaelic qualifications for pupils who may otherwise not have had access to Gaelic courses, giving them the opportunity to learn and progress towards fluency in the language.

Speaking about the results, e-Sgoil Gaelic DHT Laura Howitt said "It's so encouraging to see another set of great results and proud students. I congratulate them and the staff on their success. It is delightful to see, once again, barriers removed for those who want to learn Gaelic and truly appreciate how successful online learning can be."

The 92 candidates included 66 adult learners. The group of adult students contained a mix of those learning for personal interest, work and those with family links to Gaelic or family members in Gaelic Medium Education.

Speaking on the success of adult learners Laura Howitt continued: "If we are to encourage the use of Gaelic in workplaces and communities across Scotland it is crucial that we allow Gaelic learners and those that have never used the language before an opportunity to progress their levels of written and spoken Gaelic. e-Sgoil's online lessons offer this opportunity, and it is clear to see from the continued uptake and success rate that our educational model is providing real results in this area."

Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth said: "This is another welcome set of SQA results, which has been supported by the fantastic work from e-Sgoil to ensure that there are routes in place for young people and adults to make good progress in their Gaelic learning. Congratulations to each and every one of them for their successes."

Registration for e-Sgoil Gaelic courses for the 2024/25 session is now complete with a strong level of interest, including many of last year's students looking to progress on to the next level.
