Extended opening hours for Stornoway Library

Thanks to the support from the Scottish Government's £1.25 million Public Library Covid Relief Fund, Western Isles Libraries has been able to further extend the opening hours at Stornoway Library from this week.

Staff members at Stornoway Library look forward to welcoming more visitors at the library with their extended opening hours.

While still not quite at pre-Covid opening, the library is now able to open later in the afternoon, and no longer needs to close at lunchtimes.

The new hours are:

  • Monday:  Closed
  • Tuesday:  10am - 5pm
  • Wednesday:  1pm - 5pm
  • Thursday:  10am - 5pm
  • Friday:  10am - 5pm
  • Saturday:  10am - 3pm

Kathleen Milne, Libraries Manager, said:

"We are so appreciative of the support we have received from the Scottish Government, which recognises the important role libraries have to play in supporting communities. The extended hours for Stornoway Library will make it far easier for people to visit the library, and we are especially keen to see more children and families visiting."

Along with increased opening hours, the Scottish Government funding will support the development of an improved library catalogue and website, introduce economic mini self-service stations as a pilot at two libraries, and also allow us to work with some communities, who are located at a distance from their local library, in establishing wee pop-up libraries.

The Scottish Government funding has supported 23 projects around the country to re-connect communities with their libraries.
