Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ): whole of Great Britain

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone has been declared across the whole of Great Britain as of 5pm on 3 November 2021. It introduces strict biosecurity measures for all bird keepers (including those who keep pet birds) to help prevent the spread of avian influenza from wild birds or any other source.

The Comhairle is reminding all bird owners including backyard owners with smaller numbers of poultry including chickens, ducks and geese must also take steps to limit the risk of the disease spreading to their animals.

The restrictions do not currently include a requirement to house birds. However, this is being kept under constant review.

A spokesperson, said: "If you keep poultry (including game birds or as pets), you should follow the Scottish Government biosecurity best practice advice. You should remain vigilant for any signs of disease in your flock."
