Book Week Scotland - which takes place from Monday 16 to Sunday 22 November - is an annual celebration of books and reading that takes place across Scotland. During Book Week, people of all ages and walks of life come together in libraries, schools, community venues and workplaces to share and enjoy books and reading. They are joined in this celebration by Scotland's authors, poets, playwrights, storytellers and illustrators to bring a packed programme of events and projects to life.
There are lots of fun and free online events happening which anyone can sign up for; including author talks, poetry sessions, bookbinding workshops, storytelling and even a pitch session for new writers. All these can be found on the Book Week Scotland website .
Locally, Western Isles Libraries has launched a 50 word story competition on the theme "what makes me happy". The competition is open for all ages and entries in Gaelic and English are welcomed. All entrants will be submitted into a random draw to win one of six book tokens.
In the middle of Book Week, National Mobile Libraries Day will also take place on Wednesday 18 November and what better way to celebrate than with the launch of the Comhairle's two new mobile library vans. Primary school pupils across Lewis, Harris, Uist and Benbecula have been invited to enter a competition to give the Mobile Libraries their own distinctive names. Winners will receive a £50 book token for their school, and their chosen name will be added to the Mobile Library for all to see and admire.
