Name the Harris Gritting Lorries

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is looking for public submissions to help name the 5 unnamed gritting lorries serving the Isle of Harris.

The CNES roads team have already named one of the Harris Gritters, Snow Shifter and the 4 Lewis Gritters; Snowvid 19, Snow Bad Cove, It's Snow bother to us and Bennys Baby.

One of the Comhairle's Lewis gritting contractors previously ran a competition to name their gritters; Snow-mo-peel, Margrit and Gritty Gritty Bang Bang.

All name submissions can be sent by personal message to the Comhairle Facebook page or in writing to Communications Team, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Sandwick Road, Stornoway, HS1 2BW.

So far this season all gritters in Lewis and Harris have gritted around 23000 miles and spread over 5000 tonnes of salt. Gritters in Uist and Barra have gritted nearly 7000 miles and spread nearly 2000 tonnes of salt.

Drivers are reminded that before they commence any winter journeys they should:

  1. Consider the need to travel
  2. Check the Weather Forecast
  3. Make sure your vehicle is ready for a journey in poor weather
  4. Consider what you might need in an emergency
  5. Allow extra time for your journey
