With the Referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union taking place on Thursday 23 June 2016, electors in the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Counting Area are being urged to ensure they are registered to vote before the deadline on Tuesday 7 June.

    In the Outer Hebrides, 6,200 men served in WWI, and some 800 died, the highest per capita for any community in Britain. And yet on the Isle of Lewis, it is the tragedy which occurred after the Armistice which defines that bitter experience.   • Slàinte Mhath!

    Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is encouraging everyone in the Western Isles to develop a healthy and active lifestyle.The 'Slàinte Mhath' ('Good Health') initiative is a Council funded-scheme designed to encourage the use of Sports Centres from the Butt to Barra, which means that a family pays £25 a month for unlimited use of all sport centre facilities whilst it costs £18.75 for individuals to take part in the scheme.  There are also concessionary rates for those on benefits.


    Recent samples taken at Loch Branahuie, near Stornoway have indicated the presence of blue-green algae. The bloom has the potential to discharge onto Melbost Beach. Dog walkers using the beach should take care that their dogs do not come into contact with the algal scum. Image © superfoodliving.
