National Role for Comhairle Convener

The Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Cllr. Kenny Macleod, has been unanimously elected to the post of Vice-President of the Scottish Provosts' Association, the first time that the Comhairle has held an office bearer role in the organisation.

All Provosts or Conveners of all the 32 Scottish Local Authorities are members of the Association.

The Objectives of the Association are:

To promote the image and dignity of Scottish Local Authorities

To advance the well being of Scottish Local Democracy and the people of Scotland.

To provide a forum for Civic Heads to pool their experiences.

To facilitate training for and assist Civic Heads in their apolitical role and in particular to promote an understanding of the differences in the respective roles of the Civic Head and the Council Leader and other Council political appointees.

To collaborate with COSLA, Scottish Government and other public and private bodies to promote and enhance the status of Local Government and to co-operate with similar Associations in other countries to the mutual benefit of both.

Convener Macleod said: "I am very pleased to have been elected to this role which I hope will raise the profile of the Comhairle and the Western Isles at a national and international level".
